November 2025 newsletter

Dear Members,

Well those of you who made it to Las Ventas on 12th October certainly had a great day.  First an enchanting festival with some wonderful work from past maestros and then the Morante moment. Two ears earning him a Puerte Grande and then his somewhat unexpected retirement. This brought dismay and sorrow for many aficionados and dare I say not so much for others. I am sure we will be reading plenty more about this historic event in La Divisa soon.

Back issues of LD 70s and 80s

A message from our new member Gavin Chanin…

I am a winemaker based in California but in the UK fairly often for work and pleasure. I am a novice to the bulls but interested in learning more and becoming part of your community.

I believe my Great Uncle, Ed Lazarus, was a member in the 70s or 80s and I am curious if he ever wrote articles as he was an avid wine writer. He passed away a couple years ago and I have enjoyed finding old copies of the magazine in his papers. I did find more information in my Uncle's papers. I actually found the letter where he accepted membership. I don’t think he was a very involved member but it is interesting nonetheless. I also found a few old editions from the late 70s and 80s. I am not sure if the club keeps a library but if any of these are rare I am happy to bring them to London to give back to the club.

New book by Bill Lyon with photos by Richard Dunwoody – Aficionado: An American’s 70 years at the bullrings of Spain

Attached is a description of a new bullfight book by two friends of the CTL. If you order it, do so not through the Amazon link that is provided, but via the Amazon.co.uk site, which is a good deal cheaper.

An invitation from Duncan Wheeler

When you next send a newsletter round, could you possibly include a link to this event I'm doing with the Spanish Embassy to coincide with 50 years of Franco’s death. All members would be welcome.

Annual competition – We need your vote!

Our annual competition launches today. Please cast your vote for the Matador; Novillero(a) and Ganaderia that has given you the most pleasure during this 2025 season. You do not have to have seen them in person as many members enjoy watching corridas on television. One vote per member and you do not have to vote for every category.

The results will be announced at our anniversary lunch on Sunday 30th November, the winners receive the Club’s traditional engraved tankard.  Voting will close on 26th November.

To register your vote email me (secretarygeneralctol@gmail.com) with 1. Matador name 2. Novillero name 3. Ganaderia name, please put ‘Competition’ as the subject

Subscriptions 2026

We will be sending out subscription reminders for 2026 in early December.

Best wishes,
